Not sure where else to put this on the forum as we don't have an official lore section, or that this is even true lore. Make of it what you will!
The following are the guidelines I've created and used for working on new and modified spells in RotD:
Air - Spiritual (Sub-aspects: Mana, Time, Intellect)
Shadow - Chaos (Sub-aspects: Negative/Negation, Deceit, Pain, Decay, Death, Subterfuge)
Water - Cyclic (Sub-aspects: Emotion, Circulatory systems in the body, life cycles in ecosystems, weather cycles, Autumn)
Ice - Caution (Sub-aspects: Planning, Perception, Exhaustion, Sloth, Winter)
Earth - Physical (Sub-aspects: The Mundane, Place, Flesh)
Light - Order (Sub-aspects: Positive, Life, Truth, Honesty, Loyalty, Birth/Rebirth, Direct)
Fire - Linear (Sub-aspects: Inspiration, Consumption, Hunger, Beginnings and Ends, Summer)
Thunder - Action (Sub-aspects: Motivation, Energy, Speed, Spring)
The way I think of it, Fire, Earth, Air, and Water govern things on a level which deals with one's own person, especially when you see each as Fire (Hunger, the digestive system), Earth (Body, flesh and bone), Air (Intellect, the mind), and Water (Circulation, blood and other bodily fluids).
Ice, Thunder, Light and Shadow govern things on an environmental level. The world around us and how we receive, analyze, or act on information about it. Where Light can be seen as knowing the facts, Shadow can be seen as illusion, misinformation, or otherwise lack of the facts. Where Ice can represent careful study to the point of delayed action, Thunder is all about taking action, even at reckless abandon.
And yet these are the extremes. All, in one way or another, tie in together with their counterparts in the land of Ishtal.
