Okay... I understand we came to the conclusion that ray of lightning needs to be used craefully in combat when other players are nearby. I also unwillingly understand that the arc will shoot off and hit placeables, players, the ground, and other players...
Kinda want to put my foot down.. when the arc... shoots back across the screen and hits... ME...
Rey almost killed herself from about 2 inches ( zoomed all the way out ), lucky i stabalized before getting eaten by other zeds... there were other placables between me and the zed as well.

I need more data. And exact measurement of how close you were. Screenshots help. Either you were standing too close or the targeting is bugged. Not sure I can help you until then. -Edit- Ray of Lightning's arc should have a maximum effective range of 3.33m. If you need a point of reference, that is the radius of Sound Burst. Melee is about 1.7m. I may reduce the Ray's effective range to somewhere in between the two.

After giving it some thought, I'm going to edit the spells to provide party protection against AoE effects. In other words, your area of effect spells, which includes the Ray of Lightning arc, will not harm the caster or party members. Not everyone wants to play hardcore rules.
From an IC perspective, I figure this is the caster exerting at least some measure of control over the spell to shield him/herself and recognized allies.
